By controller do you mean drive? Quite often these days AC setups
consist of closely matched drives and motors from the same manufacturer.
It's not compulsory but probably saves a lot of hassle.

Unless you have something like a Galil card for mach you are looking for
Digital drives which run in position mode with clock and direction
inputs. There's a whole load of them on the market now. Prices vary
greatly ;)
