Graham,
On the paper switch I have read two things that may affect you:
1. Printers expect a delay between a feed request and paper found.
Under normal circumstances that would make some sense.
2. Some printers, I dont recall which, have a second paper sensor on
the print head. It may have been the Epsons.

I think I would see if doing a manual delay would fix you up. I love
the bleeding edge :)
