If your motors are big, hi voltage hi current, gecko or Rutex and many
others may be useless, and presently the R2020 Rutex has been withdrawn from
sale to fix its problems.
I do agree retrofitting with something else is probably a good idea, much of
the electronics in a 1981 machine could be quite risky, most of the time the
control cards fail, but the servo cards may be OK.
A conversion to mach3 or perhaps emc could be a good solution.
If the servo cards are OK, they will be analogue cards which are often much
better than the cheap DIY drive cards you will find. The analogue cards will
have something like +/- 5V, or +/-10V input, this is not suitable for
software like mach3, but if you go to www.skyco.com <http://www.skyco.com/>
they have conversion cards, including some I think that mate directly to
fanuc motors.
I have a machine circa 1989 bought with a dead controller which is being
retrofitted, it has large motors, and I am about to send back my second make
of DIY servo cards that just do not have enough dynamic range to do
anything. I am going to put back the analogue cards and drive them with
pixie cards from skyco. This give a servo card that is true current
controlled, and an excellent PID control card to command it. If my analogue
cards are faulty I will buy new analogue cards, I have wasted £900 and
countless hours on DIY cards that are useless for big motors. What I mean by
big motors is over 200V, and current around 8 amps. Rutex cards are OK if
you can get rid of the noise problems, other cards do not have current mode
PID control which is essential for bigger motors, you have to sacrifice hi
speed gain and acceleration to stop current overloads at slow speed.
For mach3 you would need a computer, and either parallel port breakout card
like CNC4PC cards, or even a gecko G100 which have had many software
development problems over the past year, but are pretty much working now.
Have a look on the mach3 site www.machsupport.com
<http://www.machsupport.com/> , there are loads of links there to various
parts suppliers and you can download a 1000 line demo limited version of
mach3 for free.

Nathan,
Since you have to replace part of the controller, have you considered
replacing all of it? Depending on the motors in your mill, Rutex or Gecko
should do the trick. Your $1,000 budget should cover you for getting all 3
axes converted.
My two cents worth...

I just bought a Yuasa CNC mill off of ebay, and I need a little help
getting it going. It is a 1981 model and has a Fanuc 3M control. I
keep getting an error that means the Z encoder cable is disconnected,
and following the troubleshooting guide in the manual (swapping cables
and such) I've concluded the mainboard is bad. Does anybody know where
I can get this repaired at a reasonable price (less than $1000)? Fanuc
says it has a flat rate for repair on this board, I'm not sure how they
do that, but was $2260. WOW! Anyway, I'd really like to get this thing
going.
Thanks
