I have repaired old machines for a few years now and have found if it is
more
the 3 or 4 years old and already has some bad electronics it is best to
replace them
with something newer. Things will keep going out and parts are hard or
impossible
to find. It takes less work in the long run to update to a regular PC
driven control.
There are many good version of PC software to run on it too.
Just curious how much did you give for it? It typically takes more than
twice the price
of the iron to get old electronics back up.

might check what the encoder inputs connect to, and see if there
are some standard line receiver chips there. It is possible
that a fuse has blown, or one of the receiver chips has gone bad.
