I and others have used the 'hobbycnc.com' controller with EMC and other
software to drive stepper motors. It reduces expense, at the expense of
having a 'hobby grade' versus 'commercial grade' CNC machine. For some of
us it doesn't matter. For some it does.
(happy hobbycnc controller owner)

HobbyCNC connects via a standard parallel port. And before someone
asks: No, you cannot use a USB/printer converter and have it work.
There is to much latency in the signals if you do.
