The xylotex takes step and direction and then drives the motors, the
step and direction signals come from a PC (using mach3 software for
example) directly or from another controller of some sort.

The DeskCNC system takes serial messages from the PC and converts them
to step and direction signals, these can then be sent to stepper
drivers such as the Xylotex board.

You may well be able to buy the deskCNC controller complete with
stepper drivers in a box but this is an extension of the basic deskCNC
controller.
