Welcome, and you've chosen a cool project/hobby/timesink :)

You might want to check out HobbyCNC.com. They sell complete driver
kits (everything you need to get from the parallel port to the stepper
motor output shaft) that work very nicely for a good price (I use one to
run my Taig milling machine), and also a set of well-proven plans to
build a good sized CNC router (gantry style I believe). The plans can
of course be used as a starting point from which you can modify the
design to meet your requirments.
