Hi Kim,
Welcome to the list. You can purchase stepper motors from Sherline, they
sell motors with shafts at both ends so you can put the hand wheels on the
back of the motors. As for drivers check out the Camtronics 2 amp driver
board kit, this is a nice one and is used by lots of people with Sherline
equipment. G-code interpreters can be had for Linux, dos and windows. You
can get TurboCNC for $20.00 if you register it, or free if you don't. I
works well and Dave K. has done a nice job with developing it. DOS is used
because it does not have the bad habits the winslow has, such as going off
to do what ever it thinks it needs to instead of running your program. You
don't need windows to run CNC, in fact I think it gets in the way when you
are trying to control a machine. As far as cad goes you can get IntelliCAD
for free from www.cadopia.com , you just have to go back to their site
annually to renew the license. You can use Aceconvert to generate the
gcode from a DXF file or the demo version of Flashcut will do it also. If
you want to move up in the cad/cam software world and spend $$$ then IMHO
the best way to go is Vector. Check out www.imsrv.com for information about
Vector. You can get your Sherline working with CNC for a relatively small
investment, certainly less than the price of the mill if you want to. If
you want to spend lots of money on this you can do that too. If you have
questions about Sherline products and pricing email me off list and I will
see if I can help you.
