Hi Per:
Thought Id kick in on this one as I noticed it while scanning around. :)
The Video prober on the Mach3 site is something Im working on as R&D. Its my intent to
use it myself as an organic scanner. An organic scanner is something to be used on free
flow type of shapes where actual dimensions and measurements are not as important as
actual shape conformance. In other words to scan a cam shaft is not the idea, but to scan a
shape like a hand, or a flower is. Ive had this interest for some time, and now am working on it.
The scanner module is in release actually, and does do a pretty good point cloud, but , as
someone mentioned, the real problem for hobbiests is the translation of the point cloud to
a fine triangle mesh. Laser gathered data also tends to be noisy, so antinoise code must
also be written. Its a slow project as the mathmatics is quite heavy, and there are litterly dozens
of techniques that could be used. Im having all sorts of fun learning the techniques. In the end
I want MachCloud to be able to output an STL model for the programs out there ( Meshcam, VCarvePro..ect..) to be able to generate toolpaths from. Ive found that to be difficult
and expensive to do. Hopefully, with luck, Ill be able to figure out a way to do that without getting
a doctorate in mathmatics.. :)
The scanner addon, ( easy to make and costs about 100.00 to do using a laser from someone like Dan Mauch, ( around 35.00 ) and a webcan ( around 80.00) ) can now be controlled by the 3dProbe
plugin in Mach3, also a support program called "MachCloud" has been released in the web forum
to do the cloud processing..
There is no charge for any of the 3d probing stuff, its something Im doign for fun, and as a thanks
to the community as I retire in about 5 weeks. Youll see more as I move forward with the various algorithms involved in this project. As in all R&D that I do, I cant promise it will ever approach
the nice models of the "David" software which is a very nice package, but I will attempt it..
MachCloud is downloadable on this link, and will work with any point clouds from any source I think. So even if you dont use Mach3, but have point clouds, you may want to download it from time to time. There is no charge for MachCloud, it is donated to the CNC community to say thanks for all the support over the past 6 years.
The link at http://www.machsupport.com:80/forum/index.php/board,67.0.html is for anyone
interested in 3d scanning , and you can watch its progression there..
Thanks,
Art

Sorry, it is "video probing", and because Art can't spell(or types too fast) it is actually called "video probeing".
