That is usually going to produce useless data. You do need to be aware
enough of the type and orientation of surfaces to avoid problems.
Ideally you would scan the part with the probe or with the part in a
variety of orientations, then stitch the the resulting point clouds
together with magic software.

If you have a mirror like surface and the beam reflects without
scattering then you can have problems. It may be necessary to alter the
surface so that it is not mirror-like. That can involve sanding or sand
blasting or painting if you don't mind doing something permanent. Or you
can dust the surface with talcum powder or flour or paint with water
colors if you don't mind cleaning it afterward.
