Don't make your slats flat. This increases the chance of welding the work to
the slats when cutting. Most of the slats i've seen on laser tables are
sawtooth shaped. Here's a pic of some copper slats to get an idea;

Or maybe make them saw tooth on one side, and flat on the other, reversable.
