depending on your Z layout, considder a straight torch and not one with a 90° head.

also for the slats, many machines have a straight cut, wavy table to prevent the slicing of the slats.

if you are going copper, consider using a spike. nothing as fancy as this

but, with some thought, you could make it so it uses copper pins or copper nails that you just drop into holes.

I think staggered would be better than the straight rows.

another idea is to use flat strips, but lay them over at an angle. that will prevent them from being sliced.
