Depends on how good you are at coding.

#1) - yes, it is a decent computer for about $50 plus peripherals
#2) - no, it doesn't run windows and if you want an application, you will
have to write the entire package yourself

This will change once more people buy them and start to write stuff for it
but now?

As for replacing the Gecko drives -- the Gecko drives take the output from
your PC and does serious power conversion and monitoring and control. Are
you really looking at going from PC to Gecko Drive to Motor and replacing it
with PC to PC to Motor? Doesn't make sense...
