I think he had an HP power meter connected to a serial port, and had some
code running on the EMC2 system that collected the coordinate and the
reading from the meter and put it into a file. I think they rolled all
that by themselves. LinuxCNC has several ways to do this, there
was emcsh (probably now lcncsh or something) that allows a
general program to see and control every function that an operator
would use, such as load program, start program, see coords, etc.
There is also a program that is usually used to map a surface with
a contact probe, turning it into a CMM.
