Jerry,
Betcha weren't counting on all this advice! I think you may have
noticed the red flags shot up for a lot of us on the list when you
described your grounding.
Since others have already responded, I'll only add that what Mariss
calls the "holy ground point" is also referred to as "star" grounding.
The thing to remember is there are two reasons for grounding: Safety,
and signal return. The needs of each often conflict.
Bring all of your SIGNAL grounds to one point. Bring all of your
safety grounds to one point. Then join these two "one points"
together at one point only. Most machinery installation booklets
describe this in some detail, if you can get your hands on one...
What I am suggesting is very similar to Mariss, but not the same.
Keep the signal grounds from the safety grounds, except at the one
point that ties the two groups together.
One last thought. Relax. As you know, there are a "few" of these
camtronic boards around on this list. Many have not had to do so much
to get them working. At this point, you may want to step back to
where you started. Undo "all the fixes" (since they didn't anyway),
correct the grounding problem, twist the pairs, and you'll probably
be on your way.
Good Luck. I appreciate your persistance.
