Chemical machining is a technique which involves almost as much thought and
care as physical machining. :-) I've done some work with home etching, and
have a couple of articles on my website (address in sig below.)

I'm eager to be able to do 3D surface machining as an adjunct to the etched
parts. Thus far, I've done 2D profiling (both by manual
dial-in-the-numbers and by machining profile cutters) but it does limit the
complexity of shapes I can model...
