For what? To-date, I have usually used 2000 steps per inch (0.1" pitch ACME)
on the toys I cobble. But I am now building a couple of small
application-specific lathes on politically-correct METRIC ACME-thread with 4
mm/turn pitch. Will mean 0.02 mm/step.
Speed? Fast as the steppers can go without "accel/decel" software
considerations, and that means somewhere in the 400 steps/sec. range. I
write my own software, and so far, haven't attempted to "record" how fast a
non-accel/decel driver can go without loosing steps.
