Hi,

What you seem to be talking about here is the kind of facility which has
existed for over a century on Holtzapffel ornamental turning lathes although
the speed of operation may be a slight problem. In these lathes there is a
stack of cams fixed to the headstock pulley shaft and a follower which can
be sprung against any of the cams. This follower is attached to a shaft
passing alongside the bed of the lathe and another arm on the shaft can link
to the cross slide. Thus, a four lobed cam on the headstock will cause the
toll-holding cross slide to move in and out four times per revolution and so
turn a square shaft. In practice, if you go too fast, you will get rounded
corners as the cross slide won't be able to react quickly enough.
