I just opened Corel 9 imported a DXF and exported a JPEG. Works
fine. I think 8 probably has the same features.

As for Trace. It works good. Depending on the resolution of the
scan or image you trace will help determine the accuracy of the
curves. There are several settings that you need to tweek to get
good results. You need to fill anything you don't want turned into
lines with black in a paint program (Corel has a bitmap program as
well) You can try using Corels "edge detect" filter but it can get
pretty funky. I scanned some B&W artwork and traced it. I then
spent about two hours going in and smoothing the curves by removing
points. Corel has a node edit tool that is really powerful. Once you
have it in a vector format and all clean you can export in DXF to use
with a post processor.

Some images are easier to hand trace by importing the bitmap and
tracing on another layer over it. Try to make sure all your curves
join up if they should be one tool path.
