They were turning , but they skipped steps, but now I understand that they
need to be attached to the machine

My two bits...
If you had them on the bench, and you weren't expecting them to move, they
shouldn't.... If they are "stepping" uncommanded you've more than likely
got interference problems with the cable from your PC to the controller....
Inertia and loading of the motors only effects them when they are
turning...
Not enough intertia and you'll not get a good top speed out of them.
If they are 475 ounce motors, you should have problems turning the shaft
when they are on the bench powered on, and they certainly shouldn't be
"making noises". The only exception is the chopper "buzz/whistle" if the
chopper frequency is in the audio range, which would be uncommon.
