Thanks Tim,

I tried it using your script but it still didn't work and just gave a
load of errors and no zImage file. After several hours again today I'm
still no further on. I cleaned the disk drive as well as I could by
deleting all the partitions that Disk Druid on the boot floppy would let
me delete and then reinstalled RedHat LINUX 5.2 from an original
distribution CD. That seemed to go OK and I have a working linux and
xwindows set up. I downloaded a fresh copy of release9J.tgz and the
kernel-source and kernel-headers files. I then installed the kernel
packages from the RedHat disk and also these kernel upgrades. I got one
error message on the kernel-headers update which was the 'unable to
execute script file' you refer to in your documentation. As far as 'make
xconfig' everything seemed to go well but when I came out of the config
window the shell window had the messages relating to 'config.in' which I
couldn't find saying that 'm was not declared' and two messages saying
that there were problems with CONFIG_ALPHA_BOOK1 and CONFIG_ARM. I tried
to track these down unsuccessfully so ignored them. When I got into
'make zImage' it got about 3/4 of the way through with no problem but
then came up with about a screenfull of errors all saying
'Standard Input:3470 (all had different numbers
here):Warning:warning:missing '*' in absolute indirect address: maybe
missassembled'. The programme didn't stop though and did create a zImage
file but, when I eventually rebooted into rtLinux it started and gave
about 6 or 7 lines of text before it came up with three lines:
memory 0(nought)K/0K (kernel 0K, swap 0K etc),
Kernel panic: Failed to allocate buffer hash table
In swapper task - not syncing

Then it locked up. This was the seventh attempt to get rtLinux working
again and I don't know where to go from here. Ordinary Linux seems to be
working OK and Windows 95 which is also on the machine is behaving, it
just seems to be a problem with RT.
Any help you or anyone can give would be most welcome as it's so
frustrating having had it working OK before these problems.

Oh, the workstation install almost certainly does wipe the drives as it
definitely changed me workstation identity - there may, of course, be a
difference between Install and Update on the Redhat disk.
