I have no way of providing a real standard to check what I've done...but using a reasonable quality transit and a height gage
works. Can read (estimate) the gage to maybe 10 thou or better (18x) scope.

Take your time setting the level on the transit and set it so you have to do minimum traverse to see the whole table. 0.'1'" in 10
ft. isn't bad. :-)
