I should think that heating systems would be closed systems i.e. fill the thing and then unless it leaks you use the same water:
same as a cooling system in an internal combustion engine.

Therefore: start with the softest water you can get (afford) use a DI cartridge in the line to clean up the scale producing
components. Actually if you absorb the Ca and Mg you will solve the problem but on some systems you replace these with Na
(classical water softeners) or with H+ in DI systems. Pay your money and take your choice.
Rain water might be a good place to start. :-) Get out the buckets.
