Hi Doug:
I do a lot of prototyping too, mostly plastics.
I've used a mix of CAM and hand written code since the beginning of my
efforts.
Some stuff like milled threads is much easier to program by hand. Macros
and parametric programs usually work out better for me by hand too.
Probably as much a result of laziness on my part as anything else (I HATE
writing posts for CAM programs...they're so damned arcane).
For most stuff that has any geometry to it, I go straight to Mastercam or
Featuremill 3D.
I really like being able to run those cool simulations to make sure that I
am actually drilling the hole in the upper right corner instead of the lower
right corner.
I can still comp the cutters in the control just like you can with canned
cycles.
I have a nice smooth system for getting the code into the mill, so it's no
problem for me to run it in the CAM system.
If I have to make time on the machining, I always end up editing the code by
hand to get rid of the "crap" moves, and sometimes the code is unuseable the
way it comes out of the CAM system.
Having said that, I have gotten a LOT better at fooling the CAM system into
doing it my way, so I write a lot less garbage programs now than I used to.
I never did play with the canned cycles on my machine.

Cheers

Marcus
