I agree with everything you have said, but thought I should point out
an instance where they are useful to the guy in the garage.
If you want to turn your idea into a product and need to attract
interest from potential manufacturers, business partners or financial
investors, having "patent pending" or "patent applied for" in your
business plan is a pretty big feather in your cap. It may not have
any real use but at the first stage where people are glancing at
business plans and throwing out 90% of them, the patent word can
make the difference.
