First, you have to do the patch install, and it sounds like you
did that. Then, you have to set the kernel configuration, specifying
drivers, network and video settings. then, you build the kernel,
based on those specs, and the patched source.

Finally, you use lilo to specify the new kernel as one of the
ones you want to be bootable. Then, when rebooting, you
specify the new kernel. The rt patch set comes with some
test programs, some of which worked, some didn't. But, they
all did things, which I suspect wouldn't happen if the RT
patch was not present. You would expect an error message
instead. For EMC to work, you need to add a line to the
RT kernel boot info to reserve the top x MB of memory from
use by Linux. 1 MB is sufficient.
