I have it on good authority that in the "old days", engine block castings were buried in the dirt for six months or more.
Like wine, the older the better. This is never done nowadays due to obvious reasons.
Problems from not aging engine blocks do still arise however.
You will remember about 10 years ago a big problem with a certain brand of RV with a certain deisel engine experienced almost 100%
failure rate under 30,000 miles. The blocks were not properly stress relieved.
