I just took a look at these chips. I would be tempted to stay with a
LS7266R1 (2axis) or LS7166 (1axis) from US Digital. They have 24 bit counter
instead of the 16 in the HCTL-2020 (which is a 1 axis chip) and the LS7166
is about 1/2 the price and the LS7266R1 is about 3/4 the price, but supports
double the encoders. USDigital ( http://www.usdigital.com ) also has a nice
selection of encoders in the 40 - $60 range.
