He mentioned using EMC with steppermod. This motion control module is known
to output ragged pulses that lead to resonance and stalling. It works great
with the Gecko G3X0 series as the pulse pacing does not matter and the lower
overhead of this module is beneficial. For use with stepper he should be
using freqmod. It does require a much more stout computer to be really
effective (suggest a 350 or better Pentium or K-6) otherwise you have to run
the frequency generating task at such a low rate the jumps between speeds
become problematic as fairly low step rates. I know Jon Elson and Matt
Shaver were/are working on an external pulse generator that would eliminate
the burden of the frequency task and finally offer a solid cure for this
problem.

If the computer is below the above suggestion I would likely load DOS and
use CNC Pro at least to verify motion and speed.
