Module actually has a different meaning here. In Linux, the kernel
has to ability to load and unload sections of itself. This is the
'modular kernel'. These sections can be what are known as device
drivers on other systems, as well as other functions. In many cases,
the real-time scheduler is a separately loaded kernel module.
The real-time component of EMC is generally made a loadable
kernel module as well, for ease of updating and testing.
Steppermod, freqmod, stgmod, etc. are the names of some of
these modules.

These modules can actually contain executable code made from
the same, or different, source modules.
