I went to a Grateful Dead concert in 1969, I think. They rolled this thing out
onto the stage and turned it on. It had a glass tube the size of a beer barrel
on it! Obviously the modulator from a medium-size AM transmitter, in
a previous life!

Harris has a kit for an switching-mode audio amplifier, along with a bunch
of applications notes. This was the basis of the prototype PWM servo amp
that I built. I later abandoned the Harris HIP-4080 chip, as it couldn't
handle the 80 V they claim, more like 54 V.

I have thought about building a BIG PWM audio amp, running with + and -
180 V rails, and with a power output of about 2800W into 8 Ohms!
It would be fairly dangerous to speakers and ears, however.
