Ian,
A trick a mold maker showed me:
Drop a spot or two of super glue at each corner of the plate you are
trying to grind. You need to make sure any bow is facing up.
Set the plate on the mag chuck and as quickly as possible, turn it on.
Wait a few seconds, release it, and grind. When you are done, a sharp
rap parallel to the chuck surface with a hard plastic mallet should
release the part and acetone will remove the residue.
Needless to say, do not do this with tall parts, and one must be very
careful to take light passes and not get the part hot enough to degrade
the superglue. I watched this guy make up 4 2-4-6 blocks that were all
matched to .0001 in height, parallel, and squareness.
