Joe and list,
Since advice is cheap....

Making the bulk parts out of hardened steel is
overkill. Only when you bump up against the yield
point does all that strength do any good.
If I were to try to do something fancy...really
fancy I would cast (iron) the big parts. Actual
slide contact parts would be something like A10 or
O6 ( because of the spherodized carbon content)
hardened and ground.

I would stay away from cold drawn because of the
stresses caused by drawing.

I often think about bronze for one side of slides
but that may not be practical as you don't see it
on commercial gear.

It is easy to dream when one is not responsible
for the construction.
