--- Sven,
these groups are similar, and like this one, it is not about making
chips at all! They are about scraping beds and ways. Making concrete
filled vibration damping lumps that weigh more than the the little
lathe and talking in tenths of a tenth etc.
I would recommend anyone that wants to be a hobby machinist to steer
clear of these lists and the bad advise given by well intended
computery types that cannot sharpen a tool bit (an exageration but
close)
Actually my Chinese lathe was purchased in 1984 (how time flies) and
the unhardened parts have not worn out. The chuck is still so accurate
that I hardly use the collets.
I have worked for the last 35 years in the engineering trade and I
would not have dreamed of trying to scrape a brand new lathe, let
alone encourage an untrained guy to wreck his new purchase!
The machining on this type of equipment is to a very good standard but
the assembly is crap. Just strip it down (not the headstock alignment)
and clean and lubricate reassemble and Adjust. You have to strip it
down to remove the rust preventative grease anyway. Make yourself some
felt wipes and screw it to the cross slide ways.
Good old US companies like Delta get there machines built in the far
east so don't knck them.
