I have been looking at the chinese (and other) made lathes on the web
for a while now, so here are some links. But first, their is a users
group here on yahoo called
7x10minilathe
for users of a popular small lathe available from Harbor Freight and
Grizzly, among others. A very complete list of minilathe and
mini-mill links is at
http://mini-lathe.com/Links.htm
in particular check out
http://mini-lathe.com/Versions.htm#Which_lathe
and a cnc conversion is at
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dkowalcz/lathe/lathe.html
Elsewhare in this thread, the possibility of casting custom parts for
such an import grade machine for cnc was discussed. I am currently in
the midst of building a small cupollet to pour iron castings, and I
would be interrested in this kind of project. I figure on running this
furnace about once a month or so, so if anyone has a need for a cast
part, they could either send me a pattern or the drawings for the
part, and I'd pour it with the rest of the run. If you don't want any
machining done, and you can wait a few weeks, I could do it on a
price/lb rate, so the costs can be kept down. With cupolas, you don't
want to light off unless you have several hundred lbs of castings to
pour, or else the operating costs become prohibitive.
