I am totally according with you in all points.
I tried to teach 4 mechanics and 2 mechanical engineers to scrape.
Not anyone got to the point even to sharpen well the scraper bit.
At most they became good at rough scraping.
After some 3 or 4 dozen machines not even I myself make the
professional surface scraping
well done.
So I prefer a smooth surface and make lubrication grooves
with a Foredom motor tool.
But as you say cleaning and fine tuning should be done.
