Hi Mike,

You might want to ring out (continuity test) the cable. My son grabbed
one of my cables, took it back to college to run a PIC programmer.
Wouldn't work for him up there. I had him buy a "new" cable, and that
solved the problem. When he returned my cable (worked for me on
serial), I rung it out and found that pin 1 was not connected, although
all others were.
