There are scannning laser digitisers for this sort of imaging. They use one
on a TV show here called 'The Time Team' were it's these historians who try
to find out what a village they have dug up might be like. When they find
skulls they get someone to add muscles and skin to it with clay then send it
off to be scanned. It passes a scanning laser over the face and builds up an
entire 3D picture they can manipulate to add hair and skin textures to. I
have no idea how much one of these would cost but I would expect it to be
atleast a few thousand, it does scan a large area. Not large enough for
entire sculptures but big enough for a bust if the person put their head in
the scanning area. I think they'd have to hold very still for a good few
minutes.
Hospitals are using a new 3D ultra sound method that builds these pictures
as well. It was made for scanning babies pre-birth really and then the image
is burnt into a resin/wax so you can see a 3D image of the baby incase there
is a problem with it somehow. I don't think that'd work on someone's head
though.
If you were going to be making many tens of these busts it might be worth
just checking how much the laser scanners are. They are fairly new but have
been around on TV for close to a year or more. I'm very interested in lasers
so I'll have a check next time I'm looking for things about them.
