John:
Inside a Cat Scanner is a normal (but heavy duty) X-Ray tube. The dose
of radiation from a CT is actually far greater than a normal X-Ray, but is
collimated to a slice thickness of typically 5mm or so. But the accumulated
dose is still greater than having an X-Ray of the area being scanned.
As to Magnets, I work with resonance scanners where we magnetise the
human body, making the hydrogen protons spin together in the same
orientation, then by putting a coil perpendicular to the body, we can read a
voltage proportional to the amount of hydrogen (water) in that part of the
body. Talk about your small magnets. The MRI of a head is actually the best
3d data to use for sculpting, you can get the skull or skin or just brain if
you want.
