You make a good point. I've read the comments about the Asian imports that
essentially say that you're buying a kit of parts that, if you clean them up
and adjust them properly, can be built by the user into a useful product. As
for buying used equipment --- I'd be careful because I believe that most
commercial shops are apt to use equipment until it's ready for the trash
bin, and then sell it to the hobbiest. I chose to buy Sherline (I understand
that it's not for everyone, depending on what you're trying to do)

The good things about Sherline are:

1. They work "out of the box." Simply assemble the major pieces, mount the
unit to a board, and you're ready to make ships.

2. Sherline support is excellent. AFAIK, the company is either owned by Joe
Martin, or by a small tigntly knit group of people headed by Joe Martin. As
such, Joe puts his name and reputation on the line with each machine and
appears to do whatever it takes to make a customer satisfied.

3. The machines capabilities are understated. The company generally suggests
buying the machine if your typical parts will use about 1/4 - 1/3 the stated
capacity. That's probably why the only ones you see on eBay are from dealers
(or Sherline itself) offering new equipment as a means of cheap advertising.

4. Sherline makes a full line of accessories for their equipment. Granted
that you can often make many of your own items or adapt some items from
Taig, but you CAN assemble a really good shop from the one vendor.

5. Sherline's manuals really teach how to use the equipment and accessories.
This is important for a newbie like me, who is just starting into the field.

Note that I'm just a satisfied customer who's starting to think about adding
CNC capabilities.

poor sarcasm on my part - what I mean to say is that all
the 'experts' keep saying do not buy a $5000 mill. I have found
several but whenever I ask for opinions on them all I get is "don't
buy them get a used xyz instead". I can honestly say I have had 20+
of those replies (in 2 months of asking) and not one person has
said "I bought a $5000 xyz and it works fine" - which is starting to
make me believe the experts.
A $1500 1/5 horsepower sherline is not going to do what I need. And I
find it hard to believe that a $999 1.5 HP enco is not a better mill -
sure it is not a $10,000 bridgeport but it has got to be better than
a tiny sherline that costs more. But I keep hearing, "dont buy one of
those."
