Alan:

Another trick is to rout the cross grain first, then do the sides along the
grain. That way, most of the splinters are taken up by the final cuts. Wood
behaves a little differently than metal, doesn't it?

| Redwood is especially bad as far as splitting goes. Close grained
| hardwoods,
| such as maple, don't splinter nearly as bad. And, yes, you do
| have to Clamp
| the sacrificial board when using the mill. When using the router, you're
| generally pushing the workpiece with the sacrificial piece, so no clamping
| is necessary.
