Hi,
The wire EDM machine I have seen had two spools, one above and one below the
work which were each about 5 or 6 inches in diameter. The wire travelled
from one spool to the other in about 20 seconds and then reversed and
travelled back to its original spool. It fed onto the spools in a single
layer. This sequence was repeated continuously. The wire was about 6 or 8
thou diameter and was, I believe, made of Tungsten ( a friend with a scrap
yard apparently gets a lot of this wire in and refers to it as 'magnetic
brass' - i.e. it is brass coloured but can be picked up by their
electromagnet.). In the machine, I understand that the wire was fed through
sapphire feed holes but I am not sure how the cutting current was passed to
it - perhaps a graphite shoe?

to reduce the possibility of the feeding wire welding itself to the feeding
mechnism? As the wire leaves the spool, what does the wire see as it
travels to the work (from the spool through the mechinisms and to the work
itself)? How does the machine know of problems with the wire, or when the
wire runs out? Does the wire rotate to maintain shape in the work?
