My setup does. I wire limit switch thru suitable electronics to trode, so
it senses whan shorted; if so it reverses, pauses, and then continues
advancing.

Mine doesn't and few as I understand it do.

Nope, PS has continuous output of sufficient voltage to make continuous spark.
