Some of the trackballs use a "spotted" ball and optical sensors to determine
motion. Other mice that I've seen use a rubberized bearing as the ball and
actually turn potentiometers or similar sensors. I had one of these as the
"integral" track ball of a notebook computer. It wasn't all that accurate,
even for moving the cursor around. I surely wouldn't trust it with a
machine.

| plain-black all over (now, don't get nasty!), no "stripes", etc. No
| photo-transistors. Just Hall-effect sensors.
