Another thing you can do is use a cad program, use a circular array
command to make your disk artwork. Convert to a .bmp or .jpeg and
have a photo shop shoot it to a lithographic negative. Just cut out
the disc and center it. Instant encoder wheel.
Use the same technique to generate the stationary grating (0 and 90
degree offset channels for a quadrature encoder). Add an LED and
photo-transistor per channel for a home-brew encoder. A 2" dia. wheel
can yeild an easy to align 1,000 line (4,000 count) encoder.
