Except for the new optical mice which have a simple imaging sensor and read
the pattern of what ever they are resting on.
I have the MS optical track ball and it has a pattern embedded in the ball.
I suspect the image sensor reads the pattern on the ball and derives
standard mouse signals.
PS I like the MS trackball optical mouse, works everytine and no cleaning
the ball or the wheels inside.
