I use the KeyTronic (was Honeywell) LifeTime mouse... it has no ball... the
encoder shafts come through the bottom of the mouse at an angle and have a
beveled wheel that is sprung loaded in contact with the operating surface...
they never need cleaning and any points of ware are taken up by the spring
loading... they work quite happily on any surface, from a mouse mat to
carpet, or a swarf covered bench... I bought my first one in the late 80's
and it is still working just fine... the only reason I buy more is, I get
more PC's... I have never had one fail, and I have 7 of them... they are not
the cheapest mouse, but it is a buy once thing...

Except for the new optical mice which have a simple imaging sensor and read
the pattern of what ever they are resting on.
I have the MS optical track ball and it has a pattern embedded in the ball.
I suspect the image sensor reads the pattern on the ball and derives
standard mouse signals.
PS I like the MS trackball optical mouse, works everytine and no cleaning
the ball or the wheels inside.
