I just happen to have a book called "The Principiles & Practice of
Ornamental or Complex Turning" by John Jacob Holtzapffel. It's fantanstic
what that guy ccould do with one of those specialty lathes.
The tool in most cases is also rotating. Based on some of the accessories
used for some of the projects shown in the book, it would be pretty
difficult to duplicate the work using CNC. You'd need several axis that
aren't normally found on a CNC machine.
The only CNC machine I can think of that even comes close would be the
DreamMachines I have been working on.
Reproduction Holtzaffel lathes are available if you have the bucks.
