The Bridgeport feed gears are enough to handle the 200 Lbs of linear
push that the overload clutch is designed to slip at, so there's no need to
worry about breaking things, unless the clutch is misadjusted.
The real reason for the 3/8 (I thought it was 1/2") limit is the feedrate
is .006" per revolution, maximum. I think you need a faster feed for the
larger bits.

The Bridgeport is a standard which pretty much everyone knows, but
there are better machines.
