John:
I'd suggest that you download the "trial" versions of some of these software
packages and see if their functionality and "look and feel" are suitable for
the way you like to work. We all work differently, and what I find easy, you
may find difficult (and the other way around). It does, however, take some
time to really learn to use these products.
The trial versions are usually "time limited." Some give you thirty days to
make a decision. When you get to G-Code interpreters, you'll find both the
"number of days" limitations or "amount of time to make the part"
limitations. In either case, you should be able to get a good idea of
whether the program will work for you.
Alternately, you could download a product like IntelliCAD 2001 and use a
DXF->GCode converter to do the same thing. The "lite" version of IntelliCAD
is available for the price of a download as is ACEConverter. (Look for
IntelliCAD on either CMS or Atlas Computing's web site. Use your search
engine to look for "intellicad" and "CMS" or Intellicad and Atlas. ACE
converter comes from Yeager Automation.
As far as "giving" away software is concerned, it's always wise to mention
that the software is legally yours to give. Some licenses do not allow a
transfer from one person to another while others are quite liberal. With
lawyers circling like buzzards awaiting the kill, nobody (including me)
wants to join a list that takes liberties.
